Allie's Recipe • Allie's Homemade Jewelry Cleaner

My sterling jewelry was tarnished. A polishing cloth didn't clean it. So I tried this recipe. Wow! Amazing, inexpensive... Does a great job! You'll be wowed too! Works on other metals and is safe for stone jewelry too. Don't reuse the cleaner; make a new batch each time.

Allie's Homemade Jewelry Cleaner
Prep:5m
Cook:1m
Ready in:11m
Serving:1 cup of cleaner

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 sheet aluminum foil
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon dish detergent

Cooking Directions

  1. Pour water into a microwave-safe mug or bowl. Heat in the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes.
  2. Line the bottom of a cereal bowl with aluminum foil. Pour hot water into the bowl. Add salt, baking soda, and dish detergent; do not stir. Place jewelry on top of foil. Let soak for 5 to 10 minutes.
  3. Rinse jewelry in cool water and dry well with a soft cloth.
The jewelry cleaner works on gold-filled, brass, German (nickel) silver, and sterling silver. I cleaned jewelry with freshwater pearls, mother of pearl, turquoise, onyx, and amber. The patina that is desired in the grooves of vintage jewelry stays intact.
